Forest fires give no respite in Argentina |
|
Various outbreaks of forest fires threaten the Argentine province of Córdoba, which has forced the region's civil protection authorities to evacuate different locations. According to information from the Argentine Government, one of the most affected areas is the Punilla Valley, a territory of great tourist attraction.
The municipal government of Villa Carlos Paz detailed that the fire reac Phone Number List hed four risk areas, so about 30 families were evicted and relocated to temporary shelters. In the last hours, weather conditions favored fire control actions.

Two Spanish cities have built a network of towers that soak surrounding trees with recycled water, stopping the fire's advance. Meet GUARDIAN.
Claudio Vignetta, Secretary of Climate Risk Management, Disasters and Civil Protection of Córdoba explained that “at approximately four in the morning, light rainfall was recorded in the area, and the active outbreaks disappeared.” He confirmed that a serious fire in El Fantasio was controlled, “although with an unstable perimeter,” while the active outbreaks in the southern area of Punilla were extinguished.
The authorities remain on alert for fires in the province of Tulumba, located 150 kilometers from Córdoba. Other active outbreaks are recorded in the districts of Jujuy, Tucumán, Catamarca and San Luis. The intensity of the wind is making containment efforts in La Tomita difficult.
The Argentine ministry states that 95% of fires are the product of human activities, mainly due to the burning of pastures for agricultural purposes. However, the situation in Argentina is also a consequence of a historical period of drought and high temperatures in the country.
Argentina is not saved from drought
At the end of last year, the United Nations (UN) stated that Argentina, Uruguay and Chile were going through an extreme drought. During the last four months of 2022, the region received less than half of the average precipitation, the lowest levels in 35 years.
An analysis by World Weather Attribution (WWA) concluded that climate change is not primarily responsible for the reduction in the amount of rainwater recorded in Argentina. However, it showed that the climate crisis has caused an increase in temperatures in the region, which in turn reduces the availability of water.
The scenario is not new. At the end of July, Europe experienced an unprecedented storm of forest fires . The phenomenon spread due to the climatic conditions suffered by the globe and the environmental damage caused by humanity. WWA research stated that the high temperatures recorded during the summer in the United States and Europe would have been “virtually impossible” without climate change .
The loss of ecosystems and species, as well as the effects on the health of the inhabitants, are the most obvious consequences. Added is a negative impact on the global economy. A report published in 2019 by the International Labor Organization (ILO) anticipated that in 2030 heat stress will reduce total global working hours by 2.2% and cause losses in global GDP close to $2.6 trillion.
